DIY Dry Shampoo: Easy, Affordable, and All-Natural
After 20+ years in the hair industry, I’ve seen it all—especially when it comes to “product marketing” (good, bad, and ugly). But today, I’m here to tell you something that might surprise you: The best dry shampoos don’t have to come in a fancy bottle or cost you your entire paycheck. Nope! You can make your own DIY dry shampoo that’s affordable, all-natural, and easy to whip up—no beauty guru skills required!
A long time ago, I found my holy grail dry shampoo—Kevin Murphy’s Fresh.Hair. It was a solid 10/10 in performance, and I could go almost a whole week without washing my hair. Now, I know, some of you might be gagging, but let me assure you, I showered daily! My hair just didn’t need much other than a quick brush through, a light touch-up with a hot tool, and a spritz of hairspray. The only problem? The white powdery finish. It didn’t last long, but for as great as it worked, I thought it could look a little less… well, chalky.
After spending $36 a can, I had had enough, (hello, budget heartbreak), I started wondering—”Is there a better way?” So I tried every drugstore dry shampoo under the sun, but none of them lived up to my Kevin Murphy dreams. And then, the worst day ever came—I had to let go of dry shampoo entirely and… gasp wash my hair like a regular person. My mornings were spent sweating, wrestling and going to war with a blow dryer and round brush. Then when I was feeling lazy, messy(wet) buns took over. But even when I took the time to style, by day two, my roots were already waving the white flag, telling me “we start again at dawn tomorrow.” Something had to change.
Then, it happened—I found it. The Rosetta Stone, the Ark of the Covenant, a The dry shampoo recipe of my dreams!…Okay, maybe not quite a treasure chest, but it was the DIY dry shampoo equivalent of striking gold. Which, in my terms, meant the battle was won.
Let me just say, this recipe has been a total game changer. I used to spend about 10 days a month battling the grease, washing and styling, but now? I only spend maybe 2 or 3! How is that possible, you ask? Well, it’s simple—this recipe keeps my hair grease-free for nearly two weeks! The best part? I probably spend around $2+ a month on product—if that. And if you’re blonde, you’ll actually pay even less! So, want to know the secret recipe? Well, I’m here to share it with you, my DIY Dry Shampoo, Easy, Affordable, and All-Natural recipe!

The Grease-Free Hair Hack Recipe
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A container with a lid: Any container works (like Tupperware or glass), but if you want it to look cute on your vanity, go for something aesthetic.
- A genuine boar hair bristle brush: Essential for even distribution.
- A large powder brush: Great for targeted application.
- Cornstarch: ½ cup to 1 cup (for all hair types).
- Cocoa powder: ½ cup to 1 cup (for brunettes only).
Directions:
- Mix It Up
- Combine equal parts of cornstarch and cocoa powder (if you’re a brunette) in your container or bowl.
- Note: Cornstarch is non-negotiable—it’s the hero ingredient that absorbs the oils.
- Apply Like a Pro
- Use your powder brush to apply the mixture directly to your part.
- Work in rough ½-inch to 1-inch sections using a rat tail comb or your fingers, applying product to each section as needed.
- For heavy grease, focus more on the crown and hairline.
- Brush It Out
- Take your boar bristle brush and thoroughly brush from root to tip. This ensures the powder is evenly distributed and removes any visible residue.
Optional Touch-Up:
If you notice areas that still need help, go back with your powder brush and apply a little more. You’ll be amazed at how fresh your hair looks and feels!
