Upcycling Authentic Designer Pieces Into One-of-a-Kind Handbags
Saint Laurent—what we now know as YSL—is one of the most iconic designers of our time. And if you’ve ever browsed their website, you know their prices reflect that! But what if I told you that you could upcycle authentic designer pieces into a one-of-a-kind handbag!
Yep, you heard me right!
I’ve always had a love for designer handbags, but I haven’t always had the budget to match. That’s why I started repurposing vintage designer bags, transforming them into beautifully personalized pieces.
About six years ago, I was fortunate enough to purchase my first brand-new designer handbag—a YSL, coincidentally. Well, technically, it was a gift from my sweet husband while we were out of town in Dallas. I had always heard that the designer shopping experience alone was worth the price tag, but in my case… not so much. Don’t get me wrong—the service wasn’t bad! In fact, it was better than most places. But the whole experience? It just wasn’t my thing.
So, instead of paying thousands for a new designer bag, let me show you how to DIY your own luxury-inspired piece—without breaking the bank!

Start with vintage
Going vintage is the most cost-effective way to buy designer pieces. Browse sites like eBay, First Dibs, and Mercari, using filters like “vintage designer” handbags and setting your price range to find the best deals. Depending on the bag’s age and style, staying consistent in your search can help you score a great deal, typically ranging from $60 to $150.

find inspiration
Good news for us DIYers—many high-end designers specifically YSL, are revamping vintage styles with a modern twist! If you can find a vintage bag with great structure, you’re set. Start by browsing designer websites, screenshot your favorite styles, and hunt for a similar clutch to transform, keeping in mind that minor changes can make major differences.

consider small pouches
When in doubt, add a strap! If you can’t find a vintage purse, look for small pouches like travel cosmetic bags, wallets, or evening clutches. Adding a DIY strap or chain can give you a designer-inspired look for a fraction of the price. for strap options, check out amazon or etsy.

it’s all in the details
You can turn an unidentifiable designer clutch into stunning arm candy—how? It’s all in the details! Focus on standout features like the strap, hardware, and emblem or logo to elevate the look.
In the first pic, you can see my designer clutch was plain and unidentifiable, so I upgraded it by adding and repurposing an authentic YSL logo from a vintage scarf pin or brooch. Designer jewelry and brooches can be pricey, so take your time searching secondhand sites for the best deal!
Hardware matters. Grommets are a signature YSL detail, and while I found some on Amazon, the quality wasn’t ideal. I recommend checking Tandy Leather or Etsy for better options.
The strap is key. When repurposing designer bags, quality is everything. You can find replacement chains on Amazon, Etsy, and even Poshmark, but be sure to choose weighted, high-quality pieces with a durable finish.
I hope this inspires you to create your own designer-inspired handbag! Check out some of my other bag transformations here!
