Oversized Jackets from the ’80s

Remember those oversized blazers with shoulder pads? The ’80s were all about big, bold fashion, and now oversized jackets are back on runways everywhere. With a more tailored fit and modern fabrics, they’re making a stylish comeback! Whether leather, pleather, or denim, if it’s oversized, it’s a modern twist on classic inspiration. If you’re looking for affordable options, H&M is a great place to check out. Their pleather jackets don’t have that plastic look (my biggest pet peeve!).

Here’s my recommendation: repurpose that vintage oversized jacket from your mom’s closet by pairing it with a long black dress or skirt and some chunky boots for a balanced look. If you can’t get your hands on a family heirloom, head to your local thrift store. They usually have tons of oversized coats, and you might even score a genuine leather one!

Terrazzo Tiles

Terrazzo floors were huge in the ’70s, and guess what? They’re trending again in kitchens and bathrooms! Instead of ripping out old flooring, consider refinishing it or adding a modern twist with colorful geometric tiles that echo the groovy designs of the past. It’s a great way to keep that vintage feel with a contemporary upgrade. Interested in pricing Terrazzo tiles

Macramé Wall Hangings

If you thought macramé was just a hippie trend from the ’70s, think again! Macramé is back in a big way, especially in boho home decor.  However, you definitely don’t have to be boho to appreciate macrame art. The above macrame piece could go very well with  Parisian, Wabi Sabi or even modern aesthetics!  Instead of buying new, dust off those old macramé pieces from your attic or repurpose them into chic plant hangers or wall art. They add a cozy, handmade vibe that can instantly warm up any space.

Rattan Furniture

Rattan furniture had its big moment in the ’70s and ’80s, and now it’s everywhere again—from chairs to headboards to light fixtures. The natural, airy look of rattan is perfect for creating a relaxed, laid-back vibe in your home. I love incorporating a piece of rattan into my aesthetic. When it comes to rattan, the phrase “less is more” definitely applies. If you don’t want your home decor to feel like it’s straight out of 1984, simply add a touch of rattan—like a side chair, side tables, or even a coffee table.

If you already have a piece, try refreshing it with new cushions or adding a coat of clear varnish to keep it looking fresh and modern.  If you’re thinking about repurposing or restoring rattan furniture, start here to check out options.

High-Waisted Jeans

The ’90s and early 2000s gave us low-rise jeans, but high-waisted jeans from the ’80s have returned with a vengeance. Not only are they flattering, but they pair perfectly with cropped tops or tucked-in sweaters for that vintage-inspired, yet modern look. My favorite pair of high-waisted denim is Madewell’s “The Perfect Vintage Crop Jean.” The fit is wonderful, and the denim itself is the most comfortable I own. The style is effortlessly retro and comes in both wide-legged or tapered options, various washes, as well as long or cropped! Check out options on Madewell’s website, or for the best deals, check out Ebay’s jean sale.

Have an old pair stashed away? Try distressing

The beauty of repurposing is that you get to blend the charm of vintage with modern trends, creating something completely unique. And the best part? It’s a budget-friendly way to stay on top of the ever-changing design world while adding a personal touch to your space.

So, before you toss something aside because it’s “outdated,” ask yourself if it has potential. With a little creativity, you can repurpose and reinvent pieces to fit today’s trends. Trust me, what’s old is new again—you just need to look at it with fresh eyes!
