How To Transform a Budget Amazon Dresser Into Luxei
Who doesn’t love the idea of getting more for less? That’s exactly how I felt about this project. I will show you how to transform a budget Amazon dresser into a luxe designer piece!
Initially, I was on the hunt for a dresser or buffet table to fit perfectly along my dining room wall, but finding something with the right dimensions second-hand proved impossible. I was about to bite the bullet and splurge on something brand-new when inspiration struck. Why not redesign a second-hand piece instead?
Let me warn you, though—this isn’t a project for the purely practical-minded. No, this one requires a bit of creativity and vision.
With the right approach, you can take the bones of any piece of furniture—a table, bed frame, chair, or dresser—and turn it into your own one-of-a-kind creation or a version of that designer look you’ve been dreaming about.

Find an Inspiration Piece
Here are a couple of the dressers I had my eye on. I loved the retro 80s vibe they gave off, but each one was over $1,000. That alone was a hard pill to swallow, but I was even more discouraged after reading reviews that mentioned poor craftsmanship and low quality. For that price, I expect way better! On top of that, the measurements were a bit too large for my space.
So, I decided to use these as my inspiration pieces and redesign something that fits my space perfectly—and for a fraction of the price!

Find The Right Bones
Let’s be real—since this was my first attempt at redesigning a piece of wood furniture, I wasn’t about to break the bank on it. Instead, I decided to see what Amazon had to offer. I browsed through several dressers with the right dimensions, but quality was a priority, so my options quickly narrowed. And by quality, I mean reasonable quality for the price—I wasn’t expecting perfection, but it had to be worth the investment.
Find The Right Color
Of course, you can always paint, but that adds a few extra steps. Depending on your design, you might need to—but if you can avoid it, why not? Personally, I was looking for a wood-look piece with a lighter stain, so painting wasn’t high on my list.

Find The Perfect Feet
This step is optional, but since I needed a specific width, this dresser ended up being a bit on the shorter side. Not to worry—adding feet can easily solve that! I initially chose round feet to complement the knobs, but I’ll likely switch them out for taller, slimmer ones to better suit the overall design.

Find The Right knobs
Finding the perfect knobs is the most exciting part—they can bring character, color, and a touch of elegance to your piece. Unfortunately, for my design, I couldn’t find knobs large enough that didn’t cost a fortune. So, I got creative and made my own using wood coasters from Amazon. I simply superglued the coasters onto the existing knobs that came with the dresser.
While you could explore other knob styles, keep in mind that might require filling old holes and drilling new ones. I wasn’t interested in going that route, so I made it work with what I had. Since the coasters were raw wood, they were super easy to stain to match the dresser. To keep costs low, I even made my own stain by mixing acrylic paint with water—it blended perfectly with the dresser’s finish!

DIY Dresser
And voilà! My one-of-a-kind, perfectly customized, inspiration-inspired dresser! I use it specifically to store plates, napkins, and silverware. Since I don’t access it daily, its functionality has been absolutely perfect for my needs.
Pro Tip: Consider adding taller legs for a more elevated look, or get creative by combining two pieces side by side to create a larger statement piece!
